Great Ascents. A Narrative History of Mountaineering
Description
Great Ascents. A Narrative History of Mountaineering by Eric Newby. Eric Newby discovered the fascination of mountaineering, as opposed to long distance hill-walking to which he was already addicted when, with only one companion, he made a gallant attempt on Mir Samir, and unclimbed peak of nearly 20,000 feet on the borders of Nuristan in the Afghan Hindu Kush. Their only previous experience had been one of the less easy climbs on Dinas Cromlech in Snowdonia to which they were introduced by a couple of off-duty waitresses, a part of his life described in his eccentric but endearing account of the 'expedition', A Short Walk in the Hind Kush. This book is fully illustrated in colour and black and white, deals not only with successful ascents but also memorable attempts for, as the author remarks, 'to ascend is not always to arrive'. Ex Library Book with all the usual stamps and markings and tape ghosting from the removal of an old clear cover. A VERY LARGE BOOK THAT WILL REQUIRE ADDITIONAL FREIGHT.
