The Oxford History New Zealand
Description
The Oxford History New Zealand. Edited by W. H. Oliver with B. R. Williams. Over a hundred years ago New Zealand had a population of only half a million, most of which was rural and European. The country 'lived off the sheep's back', and looked to Britain for exports, immigrants, and political inspiration. Today, an urban society counts over three million people(1980s), and amongst them a growing number of Maoris who demand full recognition as tangata whenua. A diversifying economy trades in manufactured goods as well as a variety of natural resources, and Imperial loyalty takes second place to a plurality of international relations. Some of these changes, accelerating sharply in the last few decades, have been little documented before; all are better understood as a result of the major advances in historical inquiry during recent years. A LARGE BOOK THAT WILL REQUIRE ADDITIONAL FREIGHT.
