Description

The Illustrated History of the Railways: First Trains No.1 1830-1890. 'The railway age was born with the opening of the Stockton & Darlington line in Britain in 1825. At first the new form of transport had plenty of opponents. Farmers protested that noisy trains would make their cows dry up and ruin the hunting; doctors testified that passengers would catch tuberculosis in tunnels and gout sufferers would endure agonies on steep gradients. But the country needed railways and, by 1850 Britain had 6658 miles of track and all the elements of its modern railway systems. A LARGE BOOK THAT WILL REQUIRE ADDITIONAL FREIGHT.
