Mobil N.Z. Nature Series: Freshwater Life. Streams, ponds
Description
Mobil N.Z. Nature Series: Freshwater Life. Streams, ponds, lakes and rivers by Michael Winterbourn. Illustrated by Karen Manson. 'Throughout the world freshwaters are inhabited by very similar plants and animals. Most are specifically adapted for life in an environment of low salinity and therefore few freshwater organisms also occur in the sea. Nevertheless, marine and inland water communities show many similarities in structure and organisation. For example, the open waters of a lake and seas both support an extensive plankton of rather similar microscopic animals and plants, and also fish. In the littoral zones, populations attached plants occur and these are eaten, either dead or alive, by a variety of animals, notably annelids, arthropods and molluscs.
