Southward Ho! The Deborah in Quest of a New Edinburgh
Description
Southward Ho! The Deborah in Quest of a New Edinburgh 1844 by Sheila Natusch. 'Southward Ho! is not meant to be a detailed history of the sale and development of the Otago block (a matter exhaustively dealt with elsewhere); it is simply an account of the Deborah and her coastal "knocking about" (Tuckett's phrase), the people on board, and the sights they saw - a glimpse of life along the east coast of the Middle Island in 1844. The armchair passenger can enjoy all the perils of a voyage among the rocks and shoals of human idiosyncrasy as well as those of a then relatively unknown seaboard. The reader will make, or renew, the acquantance of such persons as Captain Wing and his wife Lucy; the missionaries Watkin, Creed and Wohlers; the touchy surveyor Tuckett and his bemused and long suffering Maori companions; the fastidious government official Symonds, sent down to see fair play; the chiefs Tuhawaiki and "Tyroar" - and, dominating all, the impersonal sea.' The dust jacket has light general wear but the book remains tight and bright.
