The Life and Times of William and Mary
Description
The Life and Times of William and Mary by John Miller. Introduction by the General Editor: Antonia Fraser.. 'One of England's most remarkable kings, William III thought in European terms and dedicated his life to resisting the aggression of Louis XIV, invading England in 1688 in order to harness her resources to this end. The 'Glorious Revolution' saw the emergence of England as a great power and the beginnings of her military supremacy, but also heralded changes not intended by the authoritarian William. The Crown's powers were limited in favour of Parliamentary government. The law courts were freed from political pressures and the rights of the individual protected. Religious persecution came to an end. The Bank of England was founded. In contrast to the increased freedom of English society, however, the dominance of the Protestant minority in Ireland was re-established.' The dust jacket has medium general wear rubbing down the edges and some small closed tears. The book hwever remains tight and bright.
