Description

The Vanished World: An Autobiography. Volume One by H. E. Bates. Illustrated by John Ward. 'The Vanished World is the first volume of H. E. Bates' autobiography. In this deeply nostalgic book Bates paints a picture of his life from about the year 1908, when he first went to school, to the year 1926, when he was twenty and his first novel, The Two Sisters, was published. His childhood world is that of the Nene Valley, in which his shoemaker grandfather, later a small farmer, played so great a part in influencing him in his deep love of the English countryside, the constant key and background to so much of his work. Here too is reflected the strong influence of his non-conformist father; the boor-making town and its liberal, independent people with which he grew up and which in turn became the setting for his early novels and Love For Lydia; and in due course the part played by the English master who first helped to shape his long literary career.' The dust jacket has much wear with small chips on the spine and closed tears but the book remains tight and bright.
