Hart-Parr Tractors in New Zealand
Description
Hart-Parr Tractors in New Zealand by Ross Henderson. 'Hart-Parr is rightly known as the 'Founders of the Tractor Industry' having been the first to mass produce tractors with gasoline engines which replaced the steam engine. The first models produced in their Charles City, Iowa, USA factory were large and similar looking to the steam traction engines of the time but in February 1918 the first of the smaller, more versatile tractors appeared. From 1926 until 1930 production of three popular tractor models, the 12-24, 18-36 and 28-50 were exported all over the world. Numbers of each of these models were imported into New Zealand by Andrew & Beaven Ltd of Christchurch and soon bcame a popular tractor on farms particularly in Canterbury and the South Island. Today, a number of Hart-Parrs have been rescued from under trees and from farm outbuildings where they have lain in varying states of disuse to be faithfully restored.'
