Shores of Macquarie Island
Description
Shores of Macquarie Island by Isobel Bennett. 'Isobell Bennett is one of the very few women who have visited and lived on Macquarie Island, that wild and lonely outcrop which stands between Australia and the Antarctic ice. As a scientist who specialises in life of the intertidal zones, she decided to visit the island as a logical extension of her research work in Australia. The first problem was that of getting there, and she describes the excitement of sailing aboard the ships which supply Australia's permanent research station on the island, often under great difficulties. Once arrived, she was fascinated by the strange variety of lifeforms to be found there, from giant kelp to the king penguins. Despite the harsh climate which lashes the island with savage gales and shrouds it in mist or snow, it plays host to many creatures of the land, sea, and air - including those introduced by early visitors and explorers.'
