Many hundreds of years ago the Polynesians, as we know them today, in open canoes held together by cords and pegs, and with only the the stars to guide them, sailed to and inhabited the islands. Where they came from - the Asian mainland or South America - is still disputed, but so vast is the great Pacific Ocean that by any standards it was a truly remarkable feat of seamanship.
