'Mr McCormick's survey is a through revision of his letters and Art in New Zealand, one of a series of volumes published by the New Zealand Government to mark the Centennial in 1940. The literary sections have been either revised or rewritten, the references to art have been removed, and new material, amounting to almost one-third of the whole, has been introduced to bring the record to the end of 1957. Specific reference to quotations have been substituted for a former note on sources. Mr. McCormick has carried out his task with conspicuous ability. Generous in appreciation, he has shown excellent taste and discrimination in dealing with a wide variety of authors, and has written an essential book for nay student of the literary life of New Zealand.'
