Description

North Island Main Trunk 75th Anniversary Album. Compiled by Bob Stott. A New Zealand Pictorial Record Series. 'Exactly 44 years separated the turning of the first sod of the railway south from Auckland and the handing over to the Railways of the final section of the Auckland - Wellington main trunk line. It was on 16 February 1865 that the first sod of a 35km line from Auckland to Drury was turned - the line was to be built for the Auckland Provincial Council to standard 1435mm (4ft 8 1/2 in) gauge and was intended to link the Drury coalfields and hopefully the rest of the promising Waikato district with the growing city. The project foundered for want of capital and enthusiasm and it was not until 1872 that work started anew on a 1067mm (3ft 6 in) line south to Mercer, the line being one built in accordance with Julius Vogel's public works policy. Mercer was reached in 1875, Hamilton in 1877 and Te Awamutu (161 km from Auckland) in 1880'. - From the introduction of this booklet.
