This 1200-mile span of lonely water, subject to viciously unpredictable weather, is the setting for the stories in this volume. In January, 1928, the first men who tried to fly the Tasman died in the attempt. They were forced into the sea, in circumstances which will never now be known, when probably from 300 to 500 miles from their goal. Later that same year two of the world's finest aviators, Charles Kingsford Smith and Charles Ulm. with two companions, did fly the Tasman. Their plane the Southern Cross, circled Wellington on the morning of September 11 1928, and then flew south to land in Christchurch.' No dust jacket with this book and the binding has a slight curl but overall a tidy copy.
