Centenary of Invercargill Municipality 1871 - 1971
Description
Centenary of Invercargill Municipality 1871 - 1971 by J. O. P. Watt. This is a history not of Invercargill but of municipal government of Invercargill. However, the Council did not grow up in a vacuum and necessarily there are references to events in Southland and Invercargill that do not strictly belong to the history of the municipality. There is a chapter about the boom caused by the discovery of gold in the Lake Wakatipu district, and about the evitable 'bust'. Another chapter deals with Invercargill's first municipal authority, the Town Board, that came into being in September, 1861, and faded out after an impecunious existence of about four years. Coming down to more recent times there is a chapter on the Invercargill Licensing Trust. But in the main the book deals with the doings and activities of the Borough Council, from 1871 to 1930, and, thereafter, with those of the City Council.' The dust jacket has light to medium general wear but the book remains in a very tidy condition.
