Granny and Grandad Nicolson from Shetland
Description
Granny and Grandad Nicolson from Shetland. Compiled by Clementina Margaret Miller. Grandad and Granny Nicolson, accompanied by their family of eight and Grandad's 81 year-old Mother, left Shetland early in December 1905. They travelled from Lerwick by boat to Aberdeen, and from there by train to Liverpool. At Liverpool they boarded a large steamship the Argyle which took them on their journey to New Zealand. They travelled via the Canary Islands, Cape Town, South Australia to Auckland near the North of New Zealand, arriving in February 1906. They had intended staying with their Duthie relations in Northland for a time, but relatives travelled from Gore to meet them and incouraged them to come to Southland where they spent a short time with the Telfer family at Charlton. Great Uncle Sam then encouraged Grandad to invest in a farm and flax-mill at 'Robin Hood' near Genham, near Wyndham. When the family was on Gore Station ready to travel to Glenham, a drunk man tripped over Granny's dress-basket and his hip-flask of whisky broke and seeped through Granny's clothing. . .'
